Fantastic capture Janis, these birds are very smart and yes they love their Peanuts! We have several Steller's that hang around our feeder too, but they keep their distance...f/l

Janis Knight replied:

it's funny how Stellar's Jays and Scrub Jays share only a small amount of transition territory. Old Southwest Reno has both; I only have Scrub Jays out here in Sparks. Stellar's are shyer, I think, but a lot of fun to watch. thanks for your comment!

Artist's Description

My dad had "pet" scrub jays for years that would eat out of his hand, and one that would catch a peanut in mid-air. I'm happy to follow his tradition of these wild pets with the game of "peanut." They love to pick up every peanut in the feeder and weigh it, shake it, toss it back, choose another, and finally fly off with one.

Tonight a peanut fell to the concrete, and to my surprise, the jay jumped down, picked up the peanut, came back up, and put it back in the feeder! Apparently it was so much fun, he started tossing them on the ground on purpose so he could fetch them and put them back. The single nut versions, like in this picture, are the duds and they don't get chosen until the best are gone. But they make great toys.

Many thanks for the features on "Wildlife ONE A Day," "Pets and Animals," and "Harmony and Happiness."

About Janis Knight

Janis Knight

Janis Knight has called Northern Nevada home for 50 years. During childhood, every summer was filled with trips to the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains where she fell in love with the beauty, wildness and open spaces of the Great Basin. While art came naturally, it was her first Nikon SLR in 1982 that really ignited the passion for photography. A background in drawing and painting helped her develop her style using elements of composition and light. She began displaying photos in the Tri-county fair in Northern Nevada, often winning best of show and superior ribbons, and her photos hung in businesses around town. Finally, in 2001, she was able to attend University of Nevada, Reno, where she studied black and white film photography...
