Artist's Description
A Checkerspot butterfly perches at the end of a Virginia Creeper at the Oxbow Nature Study Area in Reno Nevada. Checkerspot are in a group of small to medium-size butterflies with distinctive orange, black, and brown checkered patterning on their wings. Some common species of checkerspots are among the most familiar butterflies. As a group, they are found on all continents except Africa, Antarctica, and Australia. Worldwide there are 42 species of checkerspots and in North America, there are 27 species.
Checkerspots are included in the genera Euphedryas and Chlosyne in the butterfly family Nymphalidae. The Chalcedon checkerspot is Euphedryas chalcedona. Checkerspots are closely related to the crescent and patch butterflies.
The Fine Art America watermark is never on the finished print.
About Janis Knight
Janis Knight has called Northern Nevada home for 50 years. During childhood, every summer was filled with trips to the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains where she fell in love with the beauty, wildness and open spaces of the Great Basin. While art came naturally, it was her first Nikon SLR in 1982 that really ignited the passion for photography. A background in drawing and painting helped her develop her style using elements of composition and light. She began displaying photos in the Tri-county fair in Northern Nevada, often winning best of show and superior ribbons, and her photos hung in businesses around town. Finally, in 2001, she was able to attend University of Nevada, Reno, where she studied black and white film photography...
