Description
Peaceful and beautiful in the winter, Mono Lake is an ancient saline lake located at the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada in California near Lee Vining on Hwy 395. The spectacular "tufa towers," calcium-carbonate spires and knobs are formed by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water. It is an ancient lake, over 1 million years old -- one of the oldest lakes in North America. It has no outlet, and has been endangered since early 20th Century when Southern California began siphoning water from area. HPI ref # 8802, January 2019
